Well the "all characters are 18+" is just a running joke, a meme. The artists and enjoyers of it all realise this.

Less a 'running joke' and more 'necessary as a legal defense in certain parts of the world where even drawn porn of underage characters is illegal'.

God knows if it would actually hold up in court, but it's not just there for show.

Well, I just think that if the characters are original to the artist and he says they are +18, that's how it should be. It's as if he made a duck and others claimed it was a CAR

If an artist draws a four-door "duck" with wheels and seats and an engine, then irrespective of the artist's delusions, we are going to tag it as a car.

Similarly, when an artist draws a character who looks like a child, we are going to tag that character as though they were a child, and nothing the artist says is going to change that. We are under no obligation to take them at their word when visual evidence suggests otherwise.
