Positive results on a test can be false if, for example, the test got contaminated by the substance it was supposed to detect from a second object, rather than detecting it from the first, actual object being tested. To use the Geiger counter allegory, testing a random not-radioactive object could get a false positive if a bit of uranium ended up on the Geiger counter.
