Well, you can drown in Fontaine.
If, and only if you spent all the "land" stamina before you get to the water.
For example, sprint off a cliff and fall into the water. You drown first then change to under water stamina. But you did drown first so yeah.

Characters with Alt Sprints like Ayaka and Mona when they run out of stamina while sprinting across water can cause them to drown. Yes, you drown walking on water.

Sorry, but the author itself admitted that it was an edit. I actually tried it with Mona right now, and even if you deplete her regular stamina sprinting across water you just fall into it and the blue bar activates

Author also said it somehow happened out of nowhere to him/herself.

My guess is that they probably sprinted/swam to a part of the water that was too shallow to dive under.
