I keep thinking that if Mexicatls colonized the whole Mexico, they would've survived. Their unwillingness to spread restricted them to Tenochtitlan, and made them easy to contain. If Mexicatls were all over the area, the other cities would've hesitated before allying with the Spaniards.
The Garland War also did them no mercy, and made everyone hate them, even their allies.
