This really got me thinking about whether mercy killings count as war crimes. The answer is convoluted apparently.

    Anyway, this is pretty based.

Depends, is the enemy combatant saveable? Then yes it does count as one, but if it's 100% sure that they will die, then no, humane mercy killing is not in fact war crime. Like how they diable life support for those who injured or ill and cannot be saved to save them from a painful death.

@Qoqonut-II (pinging you to save you from a future war crime trial)

Yes, it is. It always is. No exceptions. It's also a war crime to fail to prevent a mercy killing. Once a person is so critically wounded as to merit a mercy killing, they are considered a noncombatant and it's forbidden to harm them, even if doing so would prolong their suffering.

this US Marine training guide I found on the internet, based on real life incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan. (pdf warning, relevant story on page 43)

TL;DR: an Iraqi insurgent was ran over by a tank, crushing both of his legs. After the initial shock wore off, he started screaming for the Marines who found him to kill him, which they did. The guide explains that the Marine who pulled the trigger was in violation of the Law of War, as was everyone who witnessed the incident and failed to prevent it.
