The instrument Karin is holding is a huqin of some kind. A cursory wikipedia search isn't enough for me to tell the different types apart, though.

EDIT: Was tagged both erhu and shamisen. The latter is definitely incorrect, as shamisen have three strings and are not played with a bow.
