That’s because it’s written in Sütterlin, an obsolete cursive handwriting style created in 1911.

I wonder if the kinda gay subtext was intended by the artist. Considering how both characters are looking at each other, it probably was.

Regarding the AU mentioned in the artist comment and existing before and after WW2: These aren’t historical people. They’re both original characters by this artist, created for a historical setting.

Thanks, the only German handwriting I really know is the one I learned in school (we were forced to use fountain pens at least in primary, what a giant pain in the arse with all the ink cartridges, ink blots on paper and fingers, fragile pens, and so on, thank fuck we were allowed to switch to ballpoint pens after primary), and my handwriting isn't the most legible, to put it mildly.
