I don't get the drama about this particular Pokemon protagonist. With the exception of Red every Pokemon protagonist only appeared in their own game. Same goes for the rivals. Why is such a big deal Crystal didn't reappear? 'Sides, it's not like the Pokemon protagonists actually had an personality...or the ability of speech. Why would you be sad about a puppet?

This is called Fandom. At times it is quite odd and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, as can be seen quite often. That said, I think it is kinda sad that they decided to redesign the female, but left the male mostly the same. I for one at least liked Crystal's design more than Kotone's. The new design is nice, but I think it's really something nostalgic. Crystal was the very first female PC in Pokemon.
There's also the point that it was unnecessary. Kris already existed, so why both fully replacing her design with a barely similar one? Gold -> Ethan, Silver -> Soul, you can at least still tell they're the same general design. It's a shame they decided to replace rather than update, tossing a rather underexposed design out the proverbial window...
tbh I think this is the beautiful side of fandom (and art). To make us care about something like that and to flesh out characters when the creators didn't do it.

cris was the first playable female character in the series and appeared in the best gen as of yet no one could take her spot and obviously kotone is well hated for trying to do so those who do not care are the ones who have never heard of crystal before or have never played the games. its not uncommon to form a bond with a character i know people who have bonded with a single pokemon and would never dare to try to replace them hell some have never thought of trading that one pokemon to their current game merely for the fact that they enjoyed that trainer
