Well, if the Abyss actually have some sort of sentience as opposed to being engines of raw destruction that it's reasonable to assume that they too would want to put and end to the war eventually. They could be in a sort of armistice period and everyone quickly finds out that the abyss are far more friendly than they first appear; to the chagrin of Murakumo here.

In theory they're supposed to be some kind of "evil twin" to the regular ship girls - that much is known.

But there appears to be more to the story: in the transcripts of what they're saying when they sink, they often switch to hiragana and soften their tone. Perhaps this is some kind of purgatory and they're seeking redemption, but it has to come from someone who defeats them?

Or maybe since they're neither dead nor alive, "death" is something they don't really understand the same way we do?
