Alternatively, placing lens in the top corner of the body used to be a pretty common thing on some digital compacts (check something like Samsung ST100, Olympus 8010, etc), although it's usually on the other side so that you won't obstruct it when holding the camera with your right hand.

Maybe, but I'm not aware of any compact digitals that had its viewfinder to the far right of the camera body. Ergonomically, that wouldn't be very comfortable.
