I'm not sure if they meant so much as they were amongst the many unlucky ones who didn't manage to recover as a society, like the Hittites among others. I'd imagine Thera and the destruction of Akrotiri was already a major blow to the them and whatever other misfortunes followed simply toppled the scales for their society entirely.
