Most likely for both defense and offense. Remember how she let her powers flow to her feet while holding Yuuka in a submission? Also, Reimu mentioned that it's impossible for humans to go face to face with likes of youkai and Gods without playing a trick like this. I doubt being able to be a sturdy punching bag will do them much good.
