People often mistake two things for irony: opposite situations and coincidences. It's true that in some cases irony involves an opposite situation, but it's so much deeper than that.
An example of perfect irony I will never forget was in an episode of Futurama, when Bender was crying and walking near a river or something, and he looks up at a sign that said "No boating allowed!" He took the sign itself and bent it into the shape of a boat and used it to get across the river to an island. Irony at its best.
