When you think about it, Byakuren is the perfect training partner for Marisa! She's human, but her enhancement magic lets her fight at the speed and strength of the more physically powerful youkai out there (vampires, oni, Yuuka, etc.), so marisa gets the needed experience. She's also far too kind to ever seriously injure Marisa and would gladly help out a future opponent since her team is only in the tournament as a way of introducing themselves to everyone in Gensokyo. Even better, her enhancement magic probably isn't too different from the "enhance your insides with magic/divine power" trick that Reimu, Sanae, and now Patchouli use, so she could probably do a better job of teaching it to Marisa than Mima can.
