Yes, I'm fairly certain it's intentional. I remember visiting this artist's site several years ago and running across this piece in among their other M3 works. Since I was curious, I put the commentary through a translator. I think they talked about how they had either recently watched the series or were discussing being a fan of it/its style? It's too bad the site doesn't seem to be up anymore and they don't have these older pieces on their pixiv. I'm glad they were preserved here, at least - It makes me smile to see them again after all this time!
