For most Fire Emblem games there's a "weapons durability" stat that determines how many times you can use a weapon or object until it "breaks", so for this pic she "used" the book too much and it broke. It's weird because can you imagine reading a book one too many times and it just snaps in half like a twig breaking?

I assume the book is a conduit for magic. Either that or the spells written on the pages are consumables.

It's more likely someone slashed through the book and the front of her dress.
