All mother-in-laws always do that. It's a given.

Kyon's Mom is probably just a ditz/airhead or something along those lines.

Certain moms do not wish their daughters-in-law to be better at cooking than they are, so they tamper/sabotage their efforts, "Oh, you want ______'s favorite stew recipe? sure, here you go" only to increase the salt and mess with the cooking times.

This one seems an attempt to bland her cooking.
