Y'know, I like the way the artist portrays Arietta--a sinister nature behind the woe-is-me facade. That would've been a helluva lot better than the way she's in the game-- a "helpless" whiny girl that we're supposed to feel sorry for because she has a tragic past and won't shut up about said tragic past. It doesn't help that the VAs for both the English and Japanese versions make her even more irritating.
Although most of my hate of her comes from the fandom due to her delusional fanboys thinking she's the most innocent thing ever despite her being no different from every other character when it comes to killing people.
maybe they just like the subtext between her and anise? I never saw her as the 'most innocent'. I really thought she was just another victim to insanity. That doesn't make one 'completely innocent', but it does grant some amnesty.
...I suppose that makes more sense than what I was thinking all of this time.
I think that my hatred was misaimed. Not that I think she's the best character or anything now, but considering what happened in that one manga Arietta basically being treated as a pet by Original Ion, who was a complete bastard. and plus the way she acts in the game, it's pretty clear that she's... not right in the head.
I can't help but to feel that she and Anise were some sort of attempt on the deconstruction of the helpless loli archetype. Still hate those certain irritating fans since not only do they completely miss the point of Anise's "traitorous" actions, even though I hated that too because I thought it was pretty poorly done they seem to be liking Arietta for the wrong reasons.
