The animal looks like a tapir, but only the juveniles usually have the stripes.

This looks like the type of painting set in, say, Brazil or similar, from the beginning of the 18th century to the 1830s. Partly botanical and full of lush promise if one lived somewhere grey and dull. And unlike myself, disliked grey and dull.
