Reminds me of a song I heard:

Happy birthday my old friend, seems this horror show will never end! Any moment is your last breath. Here is to another day closer to death. The cake is on the table, And it is awfully bright,'Cause there's so many candles on top.

It's kinda funny how it would fit.

CHEN: The cakes are still baking themselves!
RAN: Don't forget to peal off the wax after you are done blowing out your cake, Yukari-Sama!
    YUKARI: . . .

The fact Ran has a SECOND cake ready to go is the "icing on the cake" so to speak.

A+ for excellent use of Voltaire, Keo. And I agree with seraphjei, the second cake seals the deal. Hahah, poor Yukari. Maybe they should switch to just being symbolic with the numbers, instead of literal.

If we don't count all the cakes that we cant see on the picture, two cakes with that many candles are not enough.

Even if Yukari is 1400+ years old she stills look like a young lady. And thats what counts.

To be honest she looks to be in her mid twenties, or whatever the prime of womanhood is. And many ACTUAL women in their mid-late twenties don't look as good as Yukari does.

In short she has the appearence of youth and the mind of a devious older lady; a winning combination.

they probly don't do this many that often, but I have the feeling Ran was feeling particularly cruel and wanted to rub her real age in for some reason.

That would be late 20s to mid 30s.

Where I live, the custom is to only put one candle on the cake after you turn 25.

The last straw for Yukari would be when there's enough candles to set the smoke alarms off.

Chen looks surprised, amazed, and incredibly expectant all at once. I think she wants Yukari to blow them all out with one go. :)

Or she really wants that cake.

I almost think Chen talked Ran and Yukari into having the birthday party for Yukari. Ran's only too happy to oblige her sweet little Chen, and Yukari is....paying the price, a bit. :)

Better blow all those candles out or else you'll be eating a candlewax cake. Unless of course the flames keep jumping from candle to candle seeing as they're so packed together.

This is cruel. Why can't they just give Yukari one cake with 17 candles in it? Then they could think that 1 candle symbolize 100 years! 1000 candles in a cake is just overdoing it you know. Think about the wax that fell on the cake! *gapped*

A good solution would be to just make a "17" form with 17 candles on one of the cakes...
    ...then on the other one...

Then put the cakes next to each other. With a caret or not.

Am I the only one whose wondering how Ran managed to light all those candles without setting the place on fire?

*imagines Ran placing 1000 candles on the cake, and then turning around to pull out a blowtorch*

Right. Then again, odds are if you lit just one candle on the edge, the other 999 candles would soon be lit. Hmm...candle dominoes anyone?

That meme is way older, actually. They just perfected it by having Kikuko Inoue speak that line. (Kikuko Inoue herself has founded a "club" of eternal 17 years olds. Yukari Tamura is a "member" too.)

I'm pretty sure Chen has noticed, but is deliberately staying quiet to avoid bearing the brunt of Yukari's wrath.

As for Ran, she could be trolling Yukari and playing dumb, or genuinely unaware.
