Why is Touhou so popular?

<---- Has heard of Touhou for years, but only recently (i.e as of yesterday) played some of the games.....and sucked at them. I cannot even beat stage 4 on Normal of IN or EoSD. And I cannot even get past the second or third stage of either without continuing.

Not that I have anything against Touhou, but idle curiosity.

To each there own people like what they like. Well for me its the games I like these types I grew up on them in the arcades, the other part is the music amazing music(youtube filled with it and other vids of Touhou) and of course the very large amount of fan doujins games and other goodies. Trust me losing at the games is the only the beginning you will get better. The games has interesting characters and when you get background on them you find you really like the world of Gensokyo.

I really like Touhou storyline for each of the games and the music and the character! >w< but what I like most about Touhou is it's epicness that it was made by 1 person...and there is a concert for it!!!

The M-1 comedy that I love to watch as well usually two man comedy with famous pairings like Marisa and Alice or Tewi and Reisen(bless Dgreater1 for the subs on Youtube)

Aside from the games, story, music and many awesome pictures, I love many of the mangas made about Touhou. My favorites being "Happy Flame Time" I also love the fact that Touhou is actually a very fan-friendly thing. Those M-1 are just epic, in so many ways.

Personally I love the music, characters and the fan base drew me in to be a fan too. most of the official games are hard for me even on easy mode other then PoFV and the fighting ones are a blast and not so bad even on lunatic.

Do you like frustratingly hard (at times) STG and fighters? Do you like anything in the range of doujinshi from 4-koma slice-of-life to hardcore loli-scat (I'd say stick closer to the former end, honestly)? Do you like music of any genre and have an ear for interesting arrangement and composition? Do you like interesting art? (If not, I'd question why you have an account here in the first place...)

Well, I do enjoy Touhou. The only frightening prospect is having to actually memorize patterns in later difficulties and games, since I have a terrible memory. Hell, I hear about people who can beat IN and EoSD on Lunatic that can't even beat SA on Hard (or even have troubles on Normal) because of this.

Yeah I can understand that the patterns are so different not just in appearance but speed. I see some beat it on Lunatic with no problem and then bomb on like stage 2 Normal and not the boss the stage itself. I just start and play and watch my character more than the patterns, though some patterns I know because i played the stage over so many times. The only concern I have is that i start being a perfectionist if, die I start over,I don't do that for any other game but Touhou. SWR is good even if its not like the others its intense

That massively depends on your finesse, field of view and mostly on the time you spend training (actively training, thus memorizing every single pattern and trying out some more effective ways of dodging it). I reccomend starting with PCB Easy, Sakuya A, though every second wannabe-tough faggot here will bash you for even considering Easy.

Touhou is made of 95% dodging various shit. Learn to dodge and you are good at Touhou.

There are a few facts of life you have to take into consideration. Only a few people create things. Everyone else copies them. Even if an artist is talented they are usually not very creative. It is a lot easier to draw fanart of something then come up with a new character yourself.
Touhou adds a ton of different characters with very light story which pretty much means you have characters devoid of much backstory and you can put them in about any situation doing anything you want.

When you are Japanese and your name is Daniel, that is what you get called for your entire life - w -;;

I've just recently starting playing touhou and it was hard at first but I've increased in skill after the first few days of downloading it(though total time I have played them is probably 1 or 2 hours). The only games I have so far is EoSD and PCB but I haven't been able to 1cc normal yet. It just takes practice and getting a feel for the game. I'm probably gonna try getting the others games before this winRAR trail thing runs out though I don't know if I'm gonna get the fighting game spin-offs...if not I'll just look up the story line and what happens. I got windows XP so I don't know if i need winRAR hopefully not.

As for the characters I can recognize a number of them but only the first names and some last names of the more prominent characters like Alice or Remilia. I've read up on a few characters on wiki and looked at some of the fun facts about them.

Protip: 7-zip > WinRAR.

Touhou has an immeasurable amount of character development. Even if most of it is fanon, it's always nice to be able to relate to characters so easily. Especially when most of them aren't all that sane. So it's most definitely the story and characters that win it for me. The music is also very nice.

As for difficulty, I admit I started with easy. But then the Inaba's were trolling me about it so now I'm practicing on the "Last Word" cards. Which I'm fairly sure are above Lunatic and Extra. This is in Imperishable Night BTW.
