Why does Barry (rival) have Piplup if Lucas has Turtwig? Your rival always manages to pick your weakness.

It's possible the 'protagonist' in this case is the female trainer. She has a Chimchar, Lucas has the Turtwig and Barry has the Piplup. That would make it all work.
