On a more serious note than my original comment, it only makes sense that his tastes might change as he grows older, becomes his own person, and finds someone who makes him happy on a level beyond 'purty girl what makes the butterflies in my tum-tum'. If anything, it's the elf who needs to grow up and learn to respect her party member as a person in his own right.

He also seriously dodged a bullet, given how yandere and crazed elves really are in the Baalbuddy world.
