I dunno to what extent the spider man was just a regular dude in those but i remember them too. His web slinging depended entirely on a wrist-mounted cartridge-fed machine.

Makes sense to write something like that for the sake of drama ( since it always runs out at the worst times) and for the sake of your toy line.

They were web cartridges. He improvised by using them as grenades now and then. Throw them into the intake of a big robot or thereabouts.
