Officially it's called "アホロートル" (axolotl) or "メキシコサンショウウオ" (Mexican salamander) but people do use (at least from what I know) "ウーパールーパー” (upa rupa). ウーパールーパー comes from a 80s commercial for cup noodles which came up with the new name because "アホロートル" sounds like 阿呆老頭児 (aho rōtoru, literally “stupid old fart”).
