In the original, Sephiroth conspired to make Cloud's life a living hell. And in the Remake, it seems like the whole world is out to get him. No catharsis, no reward. All that awaits him is perpetual torment and humiliation as he's made the butt of every joke, while endlessly doing the bidding others like a dog.
