A Wizard Futuretech did it.
The gun is firing programmable "polymorphic" bullets. So, basically magical !!SCIENCE!! guided smart bullets, that can curve and robotech around obstacles to reach its target. Probably can track moving targets too.
(Or "variable-shape" bullets, haven't decided on how to translate 形状可変 yet.)
(Believe or not, there are actually multiple ongoing projects by real-life militaries to make something similar. DARPA has something called EXACTO. And yes, they are mostly intended for sniper rifles.)
There was an earlier (as of yet untranslated) with Hawkeye instructing the girl to load "red cartridges". Presumably the bullet is non-standard ammunition, and likely rare and expensive (otherwise everyone will be using it). And probably needs a dedicated AI to handle too, like what Hawkeye is doing here.

Expanding bullets in real life work on a similar principle, though they don't perform well against metal objects. The bullet isn't likely to overpenetrate, but it's not going to do much damage to the metal object either, as those bullets tend to just shatter or bounce off instead of deforming "properly" against hard, metal surfaces, wasting most of the energy in the process.
But the magic smart bullet here has shapechanging properties built in, unlike its real-life counterparts, soooo...
