It's a fairly common industry practice for UX designers to assign specific names and attributes to specific customer archetypes. Rather than thinking about "what would men in America like", thinking about "what would John like" instead.
That being said, if John can get invested in a world like World of Warcraft or from one of the Final Fantasy games, then clearly they don't have to know about a place in order to get invested in it so long as it is beautiful or interesting.
