Vanillaware: Beautiful art, horrible games.

While Vanillaware certainly places atmosphere over tight gameplay, that's too harsh. Odin Sphere's controls were loose and could be frustrating against quick threats, but Princess Crown's deliberate fighting system worked well with its fewer (and slower) enemies. I'd say the gameplay for both was decent at best to mediocre at worst, depending on the character.

Haven't played Grim Grimoire, so maybe that didn't turn out so well.

princess crown is a vanillaware game or something? i think i kinda missed that, if..

Yeah, it was made for the Saturn in 1997 and re-released for the PSP a few years back. Neither one was translated, though.

Having only played Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire I must say I really liked the games.

grim grimoire is like a tale, mixed with the game Oddworld.
i love the character design really much aswell there. Is it the same character illustrator from Odin Sphere? im kinda interested

I play them for the art, animation and story. Each of them is amazing in those departments. Gameplay's a mixed bag but not outright bad in any of them. Tho I haven't played Oboro and without a port I likely never.

I believe all 4 games have the same staff, except NIS helped out on grimgrim in some way. But I am sure it's the same people behind the character design and animation for all of them.

Absolutely excellent games.

Both games, as well as oboro_muramasa_youtouden and kumatanchi, have been illustrated by shigatake.

For those who are wondering, Oboro fixes a lot of the problems from Odin's Sphere. Controls are a lot more responsive, which is good because the enemies are FAST! I haven't encountered a problem yet, except that I can't read Japanese...

Can't say I've played much of GrimGrimoire, but Princess Crown was ok. OboroMuramasa is epic though...
