In 2005, Professor David Hughes, a biologist at the University of Pennsylvania, discovered a very odd leaf fossil in an area in the Rhine River Valley known as the "Messel Pit". The blades of this 48-million-year-old ancient leaf clearly show very many neatly arranged small holes.

Under an electron microscope, he discovered that all of these pits were the bite marks of an ancient ant.
