A regular split isn't done against gravity, while a standing split is. On top of that, a standing split has the lifted leg going at a much higher angle relative to the torso than a regular split.

This is not to say that splits are easy, just that regular splits are easier than standing splits (in much the same way that it's slightly easier to do a clean lap of Monaco in a Formula 2 car than in a Formula 1 car)
