Axolotl? Doesn't sound right, they have pink-white translucent skin. It's hard to be so dark when your skin has no pigment.

Those gill rami are clearly inspired by larval salamanders, and since the mother has them as well... I mean, I guess they could be "neotenic salamanders, not otherwise specified."
