What makes a painting or drawing look realistic?
It's not always about getting in as much detail as possible, but more about light, color and edges. Getting sharp edges on the jewel is easy by using the polygonal lasso tool in Photoshop, if you make a selection with it, you can only paint inside the selection. Without sharp edges, the jewel wouldn't look as realistic.
