Inb4 we get a tiny SoDak hanging onto Washington’s leg.
Idea for South Dakota: anytime she and Washington are together, she turns into her alter ego; the even more excitable and energetic Chibi SoDa. Much to Kirishima’s confusion.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but based on their voicelines aren’t South Dakota and Washington both kind of a goofball?

Sodak is a goofball maybe abit of a bully and a dummy according to Wash's voicelines...
I get the feeling that South Dakota and Washington are going to get along famously
Oh they (well, their crews) most assuredly got on famously IRL.
Famously bad. As in, the navy had to make sure the ships did not have leave in the same port on the same days in order to prevent fights. And when a ship's crew numbers in the thousands, a 'fight' is indistinguishable from a riot.

Rivalry isn’t a strong enough term. Mortal enemies is probably more appropriate.
What had happened was that, in the aftermath of the fight with Kirishima, SoDak had to go back to the US for major repairs and a debriefing. While there, the press essentially gave SoDak the credit for sinking Kiri, or at least it looked like it. In addition, SoDak's side of the fight was not clearly disseminated to the rest of the fleet, particularly Washington's crew - who had saved their asses, and as far as they knew her crew were incompetent (in reality it was one electrical engineer's unsanctioned jury-rigging of the ship's powergrid that lead the ship to losing all power mid-battle, and thus they couldn't fight back).
So this lead to a perfect storm for a mutual hatred when SoDak returned to the fight a few months later.
Waiting for my homestate's pride and joy, Mighty Mo
Yeah, it's about time Iowa had one of her sisters join her in the fleet. The creators of Kancolle might have mixed feelings about Missouri though, considering the Japanese surrender took place on her deck. If any more of the Iowa sisters are added, I think we'll likely see New Jersey or Big Whiskey first.
uh no. Ido runs on rule of funny. If anything, he does his best to give every foreigners of the KC fleet a day in the limelight. Of course, with recurring favorites, by virtue of more fleshed out personalities through fanon, there bound to be some shipgirls getting the shaft like Helena.

There's a number of American ships that haven't gotten any real focus in Ido's work (Houston, Sammy B, Johnston, Fletcher... maybe he doesn't like zeco?), but I was thinking more that this seemed like a particularly mean-spirited way to lose, even for Ido.

As mentioned above, I chose to beleive that it's a play on the historic rivalry between Washington and SoDak's crews after the battle with Kirishima.

Tanaka doesn't give a shit and has visited Missouri and other US museum ships and dived by Sara before on pilgrimages. His ship fetish knows no borders.

Uh, no.
What actually happened was that the blowhard captain of Sodak went around making wildly inflated claims about their role in the battle upon their return and the press believed him. There was no misunderstanding involved, it was all ego. This was part of a existing and continuing trend of big talk backed by bumbling execution and bad luck by ship and crew.
While still not the biggest fan of the look (though giving her a proper jacket like Ido did here actually improves it a ton IMO) I do give KC props for portraying Sodak as the bumbling blowhard she was surely meant to be personality wise. It's a hundred times better then the tepid waif AL made her, that's for sure.

Fletcher and others have their time to shine in his full books, which you should buy IF you want to support him. What we see in booru are just samples. Also, its recommended to not be a dick who post full books scans on booru. Seriously Bay books have fair share of Nelson and Johnston having their time in the limelight. Myself, I have purchased his Colorado book.

I have tried to buy a copy of Also Sprach Gambier Bay. Unfortunately, my Japanese skills were insufficient to navigate Melonbooks.
