Yellow jacket nest I think, and it's not uncommon for a wasp nest of that size to be abandoned.
Wasps die seasonally and rarely reuse nests. Other creatures might take up residence if left all the way to spring, or they might break it down for material to use, but if it is truly empty, you can actually take them inside and display them just fine.
I mean by now, we already know that the hook bang nun tend to not follow the norm(as with the rest of the nunlets). I chalk it down to more childish innocence and wonderment than anything.
Just hope it won’t end up like that scene in the Shining(the tv series remake, non Kubrick one.)
