The problem is that the inverted cross is not a satanic cross, it's the cross if St. Peter. So technically still a holy symbol.

Well, it is. A city near me has a lutheran church with an inverted cross symbol atop.
But does that "matter", when thanks to heavy metal bands, DOOM, horror movies etc. far more people "know" it is a satanic symbol than what it actually is. People use it as an anti-christian symbol.
Unfortunately, people can and do appropriate symbols and it doesn't really matter what it originally was..

Is the cross itself not appropriated? Or indeed, the celebration of Christmas? Things change over time; take on different meanings, or are otherwise borrowed.
