I never got the hang of that either.

You don't put it around your thumb, you wrap it around the thumb and down the outside of your wrist and hold it with the tip of your pinky

Works fine for long or stretched-out ones, but for short ones there's not enough slack to wrap it around like that.

In those cases, index-to-thumb, release by bending your thumb joint.

Marisa's just doing it wrong.
