    Are babies still given rattles ? I've read of them being common back then since the early 19th century [ Britain at any rate ], and presumably long before, [ mediaeval times ? Just a few bits of wood loosely fastened... ] --- but the thing is I've never seen one. Not in use nor for sale...

    I know football hooligans sometimes wave rattles, but probably not the same thing.

    I had one when I was a kid. Some of my cousins had one, but I don't think it's that common to see anymore

    Classic rattles like these are probably not as common nowadays but wands and rings that serve the same noisemaker purpose suffice.
