Is it the shitty gun that got rusty real quick in the Vietnam jungle, jammed constantly, and left its carriers unable to retaliate efficiently, leaving some GI to scavenge dead commies for an AK, despite the risk of being mistook for one of them commies?

Blame cheapskates, who cut some corners during first batches, despite Stoner's specs and recomendations. But without that, gun got it's critical upgrades bloody soon.

Blame the army for that. Wrong ammo, no maintenance. The updates to the gun afterward performed marvelously.

Don't forget that they didn't even issue cleaning kits with the original batch because they thought the gun was "self cleaning"

Yes, you are correct....but the M16 rifle was improved and fixed over time, so much so that the M16a2 and M16a4 variants proved their worth in the Persian Gulf War and War on Terror conflicts many times over.
People also forget that the M16 was much more accurate and lighter that the rival AK rifles making the former a nice alternative to the latter.
