I was convinced the game was just a vehicle to sell his pancake recipe. I don't think he expected the rest of it to catch on like it did. Sort of like how the hunchback of notre dame was just a vehicle to show off the author's knowledge of Notre Dame, but everyone liked the story.

I more got the feeling that the game was kind of a fun project but if he charged for it people wouldn't play it, so instead he sold the artbook to recoup the costs of the game. Plus he's an artist originally, so it would make sense to sell an artbook rather than a game.

Said artbook is free for anyone who wants to put in that little bit of legwork of unlocking it though.

How do you view it, then? I saw someone say it's unlockable through the secret ending, but I got that and all achievements and there's no option anywhere to view it or even any mention of it outside the store page.

I'm slightly disappointed he didn't call it "Helltaker's Kitchen".

This is the same recipe as mine, you could use pig lard instead of oil if oil is too heavy for you and use a cocoa powder white sugar mix if the nutty taste of nutella feels overpowering, just don't buy cheap cocoa. Don't even think about sour cream, god WILL smite you down for such heresy.
