I distantly recall reading an anecdote about a 19th century missionary and his wife who cared for orphans. She was a wet nurse to the babies, but there were often too many mouths to feed, so he would let them suckle on his own nipples to keep them quiet while they waited to be fed. But within a year he was producing enough milk to take equal part in the breastfeeding duties.
