for being torpedoes with teeth, sharks are pretty intelligent. though they're also still kinda stupid. They will refuse to eat humans for example, but only after they find out when they bit one. They also do know what being out matched is which is why they avoid dolphins.

I mean, yeah they don't like to eat humans because they aren't their prey. Almost all instances were when they mistaken humans as seals or something. If they are sufficiently confused, they might take a nibble, find out, and then back off.
Also there was this one famous incident where a tagged shark near the California coast heard another shark get attacked by what I believe were dolphins, and decided to fuck off all the way to Hawaii.

Dolphins are assholes, so not surprised. Dolphins will gang up on a shark, toy with it, *&$# its corpse, and then go about their day.
