I haven't read the manga, but from what I gather she is meant to be a pure and innocent goddess type character. Apparently immense levels of nerd rage were generated in Japan when the manga implied she had been in a romantic relationship at some point in her past, thus ruining the otakus' precious waifu for marriage. Quite ironic, given the popularity of hentai featuring her.
