It's just a variation of the "tough guys plays cute games/kids plays violent games". I remember seeing a bunch of those memes in the Touhou fandom, using Call of Duty in the counterpart.
The main difference is that all of this took a really wholesome turn, mostly because all the fanart featuring Isabelle and Doomguy and the Doom's Twitter account jumping in the bandwagon.
