Just to be on topic, regular surgeon masks aren't too effective with diseases that can go airborne. A respirator you'd find at construction sites help with that, but the straps are made to be tight

The recommendations I have read state that the surgeon masks and the N95 respirators don’t provide much protection from getting infected (better than nothing though). They actually work better for sick people by reducing their ability to spread their infection (coughing and sneezing into the masks instead of the air).
