Legends tell of an oni up in the mountains around here. When spring arrives, it comes out of hiding and starts to cavort and sing. Its voice echoes all throughout the mountains and calls down thunderstorms, so the old stories say. These storms were seen as a good omen, a sign that spring was finally here. In time, people began to refer to the owner of the voice as "Shunra" (Spring Thunder). Sometimes the storms are also accompanied by a golden rain, ushering in a good harvest. My great-grandpa claimed to have met Shunra once, back when he was a kid. He described her as a beautiful young woman with horns. Of course, no one hears her singing anymore... Actually, that's not entirely true. My grandma says she can hear it, and I have a fuzzy memory of songs echoing down from the mountains when I was little. Maybe this oni is still out there, and we've just lost the ability to see or hear her. If she really does exist, I'd love to meet her someday.
