I think there's actually some comic that happened within the last 5 years, where it plays around with the idea of Joker actually being immortal, and from prehistoric times. I don't know exactly what that was about, mainly because I stayed away from it after reading a couple of pages.

Last I heard, DC is playing with the idea that there have been three different Jokers in the current DC universe.

They're playing it up as being "The Joker" as less being a person and more being a mental state. Especially with how the Batman Who Laughs has "infected" people.

That'd probably have been Scott Snyder's Batman run. Ultimately, it turns out not to be the case.
