Following is you get notified of other peoples new stuff

Think of it as a content creator page on youtube followers are the subscribers and who you are following are basically other youtube content creator you are a subscriber of

I was initially confused too, but "Following" is how many people to whom the protagonist is subscribed. "Followers" is the number of people subscribed to his account.
