ZuiZui looks like the MC here, while Enty is the villain.

Dont cry ZuiZui, you did your best.

Was Enty smug? I got the vibe that Enty just wanted to end the fight as quickly as possible.

This never even happened in the anime, yet they post it on the ENG twitter? Goes to show how crap the management is over on ENG. Making Enterprise, their supposed mascot, out to be the villain? Jesus Christ, lol.

Enterprise: "Is this your best crane? You don't even have a full fighter squadron!"

Zuikaku: "Scars left from the Philippine Sea. I am nothing but an empty shell now. A crane with no wings. But I can still sing Enterprise. I have lured you in like a siren to save the Center Force and although I may die, I have already won."

Enterprise: "Don't make me laugh. The Center Force has been destroyed! Your 'cranesong' is nothing but the last gasp of a crushed turkey."

Zuikaku: *wry smile* "Are you sure about that? The Center Force is not so easily stopped!"

Well, the Center Force was getting bodied by a few destroyer escorts, so that's not much of a brag.

The miracle of the Battle Off Samar is that the destroyer escorts lasted as long as they did. What few ships the Japanese side lost were mostly due to aircraft from the carriers they were protecting, and possibly a lucky shot from a carrier itself mingling with just how much of a risk oxygen torpedoes carried especially when put on cruisers coming back to bite the IJN. The best the DEs could claim was that they turned back blatantly superior forces. (And you know, that's quite a claim, regardless. Giving the carriers and land bases the time they needed to rearm the planes to actually threaten a naval force that powerful was the best they could possibly accomplish. Just don't oversell it.) IIRC, they didn't hit with a single torpedo and a DE's pea shooters were practically meaningless against anything larger than a DD, especially as they were being pummeled from well out of range.

For that matter, as much as it's seen as a humiliating defeat that the IJN retreated, Kurita had little way of knowing he'd accidentally lucked out with Bull Halsey's charge and that there wasn't going to be a Task Force 34 (which even slightly better coordination between Halsey and Pacific Command would have sent his way) that would suddenly flank him, cut off his means of escape, and ultimately destroy the bulk of the remaining capacity the IJN had to resist the USN's advance.

If I recall, a DE blew off Kumano's bow with a torpedo and destroyed Chikuma's bridge with its guns.

Also, the torpedos missed Yamato, but that forced it to disengage.

Johnston blew off Kumano's bow off with her torpedo.

I stand corrected. A Google search says DE Samuel B Roberts blew off Choukai's stern with torpedos. I got my ships confused.

Enty absolutely deserves to paste this smug grin on her face and taunt zui, one of the 6 carriers that murdered about 2500 people of a nation not at war, destroyed a dozen or so ships all so they could murder, rape and pillage across Asia unhindered, only to get fucked up in the end, by a nation they discounted as cowards without a will to fight.

Japan would never forget the lesson they were taught here.

Shouldn't it be 1st or 2nd CarDiv instead of Zui here? Midway occurred relatively early on in the war (summer of 42), leaving the cranes and their juniors to bleed for the rest of it and rack up wartime accomplishments. Even Enterprise would've forgotten Akaga and the Souryuus with the rest of the war going on.

Although the whole piece does feel like it's all in Zuikaku's head.

Enterprise: "You'll be joining your sister soon, Turkey of Mariana."
    Zuikaku: "You... YOU BASTARD!!!"

(Zuikaku angrily charges Enterprise with everything she's got... Just as Enterprise had planned.)

Just for Lexington CV-16 to finish Zuikaku off, finish her seemed endless luck to survive that far on the war.
