...Does this actually work in the games though? 99% of the time, a guard will fire some cautionary rounds into the box and then lift it up.

Well, that only happens if you do such a thing as hide inside the box right in the middle of the route that the guard is going to walk on, or do so within their sight range, or Full Alert is on and you're unlucky enough that they got close enough to you to suspect the box for one reason or the other.

Otherwise, they'll completely ignore the previously nonexistent box's existence.
